T-Bird Evaluation Camp underway

If the players competing for a spot on the 2010-11 edition of the South Island Thunderbirds did not know what the evaluators were looking for ahead of time, the first day of camp should have made a couple of themes painfully clear.

At the Major Midget level, just as in the junior and professional ranks, the game keeps getting faster so any evaluation starts with an emphasis on skating.  In just under 75 minutes on the ice Friday night at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre, the 60+ skaters had plenty of opportunity to display their skating proficiency in a variety of one on one, two on one and three on one drills.  And between those drills, they skated some more.  There was not a lot of rest as Coach Craig Didmon pushed the players to their limits and beyond.

The camp began as Didmon outlined the program and expectations to the hopeful players.  Then the task of identifyng talent began.  And talent there was -  from the returning veterans to the first year tryouts, there was an incredible amount of worthy players hoping to don the Tbird jersey.

Saturday will see each team play 2 games and then return on Sunday morning to compete yet again.  The final intersquad game will take place on Sunday at 1 pm.
